SportExcel - Yayasan Kecemerlangan Sukan Malaysia

The SportExcel Yayasan Kecemerlangan Sukan Malaysia has an Athlete Assistance Program where each year SportExcel will provide elite performer or high potential performance athlete with financial assistance to defray costs associated with their training and competition programs.
The grant components are:-

  4. equipment essential in competitions.

As mentioned this is only a nomination and our bowlers will need to be deemed worthy to be awarded the grant based on their achievements of the last 2 years against athletes from other sports such as cycling, shooting, archery and many others.
We will keep all updated if our athletes have been successful in winning the grant. Lets keep our fingers crossed and pray for their success.

Quote of the day!!!

"To win takes a complete commitment of mind and body. When you can't make that commitment, they don't call you a champion anymore."
Rocky Marciano (September 1, 1923 – August 31, 1969), born Rocco Francis Marchegiano, was an Italian-American boxer and the heavyweight champion of the world from September 23, 1952, to April 27, 1956. When he retired he became the only heavyweight champion to finish his career undefeated.

A lot of people put a lot of effort and sacrifices to get to the top. When at the top a lot of champions are vulnerable to the "COMPLACENCY" disease. Taking things for granted, laziness and cockiness are the main causes of the fatal disease of champions. Some can't cure it, those that do find the road to recovery more painful then the initial climb.

"Fit for Bowling, Fit for Life" fitness session #1 (16.04.2011 - Civic Centre @0900hrs)

U.S.P.T.N. AA and Pusat Cemerlang trainees attended the "Fit for Bowling, Fit for Life" fitness session at the Civic Centre in Kuching. The session which was held at 9am in the morning was organised and conducted by state tenpin bowling coaches, Angelo Koay together with Myron Khoo and Jeff Chin Jit Chong.
The aim of the fitness session was to introduce simple, easy and effective exercises for these young trainees which they can do at the comforts of their own home, is free and only takes up only 15 to 20 minutes of their time everyday. The 10 main exercise when performed can give a whole body workout from the arms, shoulders, abs, back and legs.
Senior bowlers and parents were also invited to join but as today was the state election day for the state of Sarawak, only Caroline Chien and Kelvin Eng of the 90's team joined. The session was initiated by the said coaches to remind bowlers that despite whatever age they may be, maintaining a good healthy lifestyle through exercise is important.
Doing the "Steps" is one very simple and effective exercise.

All shape, age and size can do it.
And its pretty fun too.

Easy, effective and fun, how exercise should be...

Caroline showing even the seniors can do it...

But then of course after some amount of repetitions...

Breathing gets heavier and muscles starts to sore and this happens...haha!!!

Then another simple exercise, just extend arms and go around in circles...

From little circles, to mid sized circle then to super big circles...

Then relax the muscles by just doing the gripping action...

Reach for the stars...

Of course, some could do it with a smile but don't think the look on Brendan's face is a smile...Haha!!!

Hopefully in future more of these sessions will be held and participation from senior bowlers and parents will be better as with the busy schedule the coaches have, opportunities like this will be limited.

37th MWA Thailand International Open

Chong Jun Foo finishes  5th in the Youth Boys Open Finals.
Sarawak's Sukma golden boy, Chong Jun Foo, missed a podium finish by only 11 pins from 3rd place. By scratch, Jun Foo would have been among the medal winners but this championship does award handicap based on bowler's grade. The 8 games finals saw Jun Foo finished with a 192.50 average. The overall low scoring in the tournament suggests that the lanes were oiled tough for participants.
Nonetheless, it was still a good outing for Jun Foo and finishing 5th among top youths from Korea and Thailand is still a feat by the 18 year old Sarawakian boy. Well done Chong Jun Foo and congratulations!!!

Congratulations to Muhd Syafiq Bin Sajeli

In the just recently held National Youth Selection Trials 2011 in Sunway Megalanes, Selangor D.E., Muhd Syafiq Bin Sajeli successfully claimed his place in the Malaysian junior team joining up with fellow Sarawakian Aris Ardila Santosoh and Chong Jun Foo.
After 3 days of intense battle over 30 games, Syafiq managed to finish in the top 4 of the boys division. Syafiq who this year is a form 4 student of S.M.K. Batu Lintang, was also part of the state's successful Sukma Melaka 2010 team which won 7 Golds out of the 12 and thus claiming their maiden overall title for the sport of tenpin bowling in the games.
The young lad who has been bowling since the age of 10 was always regarded as one of the most natural and talented trainee by his coaches and always had the potential to be part of the Malaysian National Youth team. At last his promise has been fulfilled but the down to earth athlete knows the hard and tough road at hand facing him as getting into the team is one thing but maintaining your place in it is the hard part.
We wish him all the best and good luck. May his inclusion into the national team bring more success and glory for him, state and country.

Congratulations Syafiq!!!

Quote of the day!!!

For those Sarawak warriors, especially Jonathan Ding Sagan, who are taking part in the National Youth Selection Trials 2011 which is currently being held in Sunway Megalanes, Selangor D.E.
Remember today's best and make it greater but forget the day's worst as tomorrow is another day and all is not lost yet as long the fire of hope burns strongly in your heart.
All the best brothers and sisters, good luck and NEVER SAY NEVER!!!

See I never thought that I could walk through fire.
I never thought that I could take the burn.
I never had the strength to take it higher,
Until I reached the point of no return.

And there's just no turning back,

When your hearts under attack,
Gonna give everything I have,
It's my destiny.

I will never say never! (I will fight)

I will fight till forever! (make it right)
Whenever you knock me down,
I will not stay on the ground.
Pick it up,
Pick it up,
Pick it up,
Pick it up up up,
And never say never.

I never thought I could feel this power.

I never thought that I could feel this free.
I'm strong enough to climb the highest tower.
And I'm fast enough to run across the sea.

And there's just no turning back,

When your hearts under attack,
Gonna give everything I have,
Cause this is my destiny.

I will never say never! (I will fight)

I will fight till forever! (make it right)
Whenever you knock me down,
I will not stay on the ground.
Pick it up,
Pick it up,
Pick it up,
Pick it up, up, up,
And never say never.

Here we go!

Guess who?
JSmith and Jb!
I gotcha lil bro.

I can handle him.
Hold up, aight?
I can handle him.

Now he's bigger than me,

Taller than me.
And he's older than me,
And stronger than me.
And his arms a little bit longer than me.
But he ain't on a JB song with me!

I be trying a chill

They be trying to side with the thrill.
No pun intended, was raised by the power of Will.

Like Luke with the force, when push comes to shove.

Like Cobe with the 4th, ice water with blood.

I gotta be the best, and yes

We're the flyest.
Like David and Goliath,
I conquered the giant.
So now I got the world in my hand,
I was born from two stars
So the moon's where I land.

I will never say never! (I will fight)

I will fight till forever! (make it right)
Whenever you knock me down,
I will not stay on the ground.
Pick it up,
Pick it up,
Pick it up,
Pick it up, up, up,
And never say never.

I will never say never! (I will fight)

I will fight till forever! (make it right)
Whenever you knock me down,
I will not stay on the ground.
Pick it up,
Pick it up,
Pick it up,
Pick it up, up, up,

And never say never.

Sport Science Level 1

A Sports Science Level 1 course was held recently in Sibu from 04.04.2011 to 08.04.2011 which was attended by more than 50 coaches from the whole of Sarawak. It was the best attendance for such a course up to date in Sarawak. Coaches and officials from I.S.N., M.S.N.S. themselves, football, ping pong, softball, kaabadi, taekwondo, paralympics, tennis, shooting and of course tenpin bowling made time to attend this once a year course.
The course was organised by the National Sports Council of Malaysia together with the Sports Council of Sarawak and Encik Ahmad Suhaimi Yaakub was present as the N.S.C.'s representative. facilitators for the different subjects were also brought in to give the most up to date and to impart their expert knowledge.
The course was to introduce the basics of science in sports to help enhance athlete's development and performance while also keeping them safe from injury. The informative course included the subject of anatomy and physiology, sports nutrition, philosophy and principles of coaching, sports medicine, physical and strength conditioning, sports psychology, and bio mechanics.
For the anatomy and physiology, sports nutrition, sports psychology and bio mechanics, Dr. Ong Kong Swee was the lecturer and he made the recognition and memorization of the human bone and muscle ever so easy.
As for the subject of coaching competence and sports medicine, the facilitator was Dr. Chin Ngien Siong who made it very interesting and humourous with his explanations and elaborations, not forgetting his "Waalau eh" to end his every sentence.
For the knowledge of planing appropriate physical and strength conditioning training, Mr. Lim Eng Hui was called upon to give his teachings and experiences on the subject.
The subject of periodisation in trainings.

Leverage or "tuas" in Bahasa Malaysia.

Leverage Class 2

Leverage Class 3

The class.

After 4 days of absorbing all the information, terms and definitions it was time to put it all to the test and see how much the participants understood. Assignments was given and so was an objective exam which was 1 hour and 30 minutes of time duration. Results should be known by the participants in 2 months time.
Then of course was the closing ceremony of the course, many friendships were made and feelings of missed will be felt as participants come from all parts of the state. Of course staying in touch won't be a problem in this day and age as we have sms, emails, Facebook and Twitter to keep us all in constant contact. God bless technology.

The class penghulu's representative to be the MC.

Encik Ahmad Suhaimi Yaakub to say a few words during the closing ceremony.

Our Penolong Pengarah of M.S.N.S. giving her speech.

Then it is certificate of participation time for those who attended the course.

Cikgu Azizan is the name of the MC.

The gang.

And of course, not missing and forgetting the traditional practice of cam-whoring sessions at the very end for memorabilia of the educational gathering.

Young and old, male and female, all attended to better themselves for the development and progress of their athletes and sports for Sarawak.

The best looking dudes in the course, the one on the far left anyway.

Lastly, best wishes, appreciation and applause to M.S.N. and M.S.N. Sarawak for successfully organising the Sports Science Level 1 course. Great job, well done and many thanks for making our stay in Sibu for the 4 days convenient and comfortable.
Special thanks and gratitude to the facilitators who took the time out from their busy schedule to teach and impart their valuable knowledge and priceless experience on to us so we may enhance our trainings to effectively develop our sport and athletes' performance to maintain Sarawak as one of the powerhouse of sports in Malaysia.
To our fellow coaching counterparts and state athletes who will be taking part in the coming Sukma to be held in this coming June at Bukit Jalil.....Good luck and all the best!!!

U.S.P.T.N. AA trainees at the fitness session in Unimas

First day of fitness training for our young U.S.P.T.N. trainees at Unimas gym which is one of the best equipped fitness centre I've seen so far in Sarawak.
With a room for cardio-vascular conditioning, then for aerobics and another solely for weight machines. Best part of all is the gym is very clean and well-maintained and the man behind it all is Encik Sappian who is also a bowler himself. The gracious and humble Sappian also offered himself to be the fitness guru for our trainees.
Being young, most of our trainees were new to fitness and strength trainings and muscle soreness, cramps, moans and groans were expected. Hopefully these kids will not be afraid of a little soreness and discomfort and carry on doing the exercises taught on their own initiative whenever they have free time at home.
Remember kids, it is the extra mile that you are willing  to go to succeed that will set you a part from the rest of the field. That is the champions way.

Rise and shine to an early morning jog.

Listening intently to instructions and explanations of the next exercise.

And the exercise begins.

After completing the 1st exercise, its rest time while listening to instruction for the next.

The star jump.

Rest again while the instructions for the next exercise is being explained.
The trainees with Sappian (7th from right).

Trainees, coaches with some Unimas Bowling Team members together with Sappian gather for a group photo.

The trainees finished up their fitness training at around 11.30am and will be back for more next week. All in all  the trainees did well event though it was their first time
We would also like to express our gratitude and appreciation to Unimas to permitting our trainees to have access and make us of their wonderful facilities.
